More signs should tout Park-n-Ride
3/25/2010

Over the past few weeks a small but vocal group of Owego residents has been urging the village board to maintain funding for the village's Metra Park-n-Ride facility.

During a recent board meeting, one of the Park-n-Ride advocates noted that the village could be doing much more to promote use of the facility at a very nominal cost. We totally agree.

Currently there are only a handful of roadside signs indicating the presence of the Park-n-Ride and those signs are placed along Mill and Orchard road near the facility. Assuming the board finds the funding and agrees to keep the Park-n-Ride open, additional signs directing motorists to the Park-n-Ride should be placed along U.S. Route 34, Ill. Route 31, Ill. Route 71, U.S. Route 30 and Galena Road. The signs would serve to make more people aware of the facility and, ultimately, help build ridership.

In addition, the village could post additional information concerning the Park-n-Ride on the village's web site at oswegoil.org and in the village's newsletter.

Since the Park-n-Ride was developed in 2004 as a regional facility, village officials could also approach their counterparts in neighboring Montgomery and Yorkville and ask that they post information on the Park-n-Ride on their web sites and in their community newsletters as a no cost service to their residents who ride Metra and those considering moving to the area.
