Six District 308 athletes will travel to O'Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University for the girls' track and field state finals this weekend.
Oswego High School advanced two athletes out of the Class 2A Oak Forest Sectional, while Oswego East sends four members of the 4x200-meter relay team after they qualified in the Class 3A Plainfield Central Sectional last Saturday.
The IHSA state finals begin today, Thursday, with the Class 1A preliminaries and resumes Friday with the Class 2A and Class 3A preliminaries beginning at 9 a.m.
Oak Forest Sectional
Oswego senior Christina Sliepka will make her third trip to Charleston as the distance runner qualified for the second straight season in both the 3,200-meter and 1,600-meter races.
Sliepka, a two-event sectional champion, won the two-mile race by more than 34 seconds with a time of 11:41.20, and won the one-mile race by 13 seconds clocking in at 5:24.03.
Sliepka currently holds the fifth fastest time in the 1,600 and the seventh fastest time in the 3,200.
Freshman Riley Vann made her sectional debut one to remember as she won the pole vault by clearing 9-feet. She qualified in a second event when she placed sixth in the 100-meter hurdles with a finish of 15.69 seconds, exceeding the state-qualifying time of 16.04 to advance to state. Pole vault begin Friday at 9 a.m.
The 1,600-meter preliminaries will take place Friday at 11:40 a.m. with the three heat winners plus the next nine best prelim times advancing to Saturday's finals.
Saturday's finals begin at 9 a.m. with pole vault finals at 10 a.m., 3,200-meter run finals at 10 a.m., and the 1,600-meter finals at 3:35 p.m.
Plainfield Central Sectional
In the ultra-competitive Plainfield Central Sectional, Oswego East athletes needed to meet state-qualifying standards to advance to state.
Oswego East highlighted the day with a state-qualifying performance in the 4x200-meter relay. Needing a top-two finish or a time at or faster than 1:46.74, junior Amani Eddins, freshman Ksandra Jackson and junior Marissa Craft completed the first 600 meters. Junior Jasmine Davis anchored the relay and crossed the finish line in 1:44.5 as Oswego East placed third overall. Waubonsie Valley won the race in 1:42.5 while West Aurora took runner-up honors at 1:44.0.
Oswego East's sectional time currently ranks 11th among all state qualifiers in the event.
Oswego East qualified in the same event one year ago, competing in Class AA. Davis is the only returning member from that state-qualifying relay, which did not advance out of the 2008 state prelims with a time of 1:45.11.
The 4x200-meter preliminaries begin Friday at 3:15 p.m. with the four heat winners plus the next five best prelim times qualifying for Saturday's finals. Saturday's 4x200 finals begin at 2:25 p.m.
