A nationwide recession and the resulting near halt in the number of new housing starts in the Oswego School District have prompted school officials to drastically scale back the number of new teachers that will be hired for the next school year.
Todd Colvin, assistant superintendent for administration, asked school board members Monday night for approval to hire seven new teachers for the 2009-10 school year, down from about 90 this year, 150 in 2007-08 and 200 in 2006-07.
The number of new teachers being hired has dropped drastically because of the nationwide recession that has drastically cut new home starts throughout the district.
The board approved hiring the seven which will include four high school teachers, one speech pathologist, and two dual language teachers for the two sections of dual language being added next year.
He said there is a large eighth grade class moving into the high schools. "We are seeing more growth in the high schools and less at the elementary level," he said.
"We have some junior high teachers who are certified to teach high school so they will be moved. The students' class selections will determine what new high school teachers will be hired.
"Support staff and other needs will be brought to you later," he said.
The new hires are within the budget, Colvin said, but noted that this reflects a tightening of the belt.
"We have been very comfortable with our staffing in the past. There may be more additions later, but we're tightening up, so some classes may be slightly larger this year," he said
