Oswego East girls' bowling rolls past Morris to remain undefeated

by Christine Bolin Dascher

12/6/2012

Winning but not over-confident just yet, the Oswego East girls' bowling team is off to a great start so far this season.

The Wolves have nabbed a first-place finish in every competition so far this season - and they've done a lot of damage without their best bowler, senior and Vanderbilt-bound Giselle Poss.

"We're feeling good, but still searching for the best lineup," Oswego East head coach Jeremy Hillman said. "We're not taking all the early success to much to heart, but the girls are very optimistic."

In their first non-conference dual meet of the season, the Wolves beat Waubonsie Valley by a single pin. The final score was 3,139-3,138 on Nov. 28 at Parkside Lanes.

Waubonsie Valley won the first two games and had a solid lead for series after rolling 1,061 and 1,065 over Oswego East's 982 and 992.

The Wolves, however, battled back the third game with an outstanding 1,165 game.

Oswego East was led by senior Tricia Thornton (678 series), juniors Kailey Kopacz (655) and Taylor DeLano (654).

"Waubonsie came out and was hot," Hillman said. "We just wanted to have a good showing. I was very proud of the way our girls fought back. They did not back down. Going into the last game, they did not pack it up. They battled back. That 1,165 game was not out of their range. That's something they are very capable of."

Oswego East also won its first Southwest Prairie Conference outing of the season last Thursday, when the Wolves topped Romeoville, 2,994-2,324, at the Strike N'Spare.

Poss returned to action in this matchup and did not disappoint. Her 681 series was the best on both sides. Thornton rolled a 601, freshman Abby Ragsdale posted a 589, Kopacz a 552 and sophomore Averee Bottcher a 546.

On Tuesday against non-conference Morris at Echo Lanes, Oswego East won, 3,105-2,563. Thornton led the way with a 646, followed by Poss (639), DeLano (636), Bottcher (583), Kopacz (549) and Ragsdale (546).

Oswego East resumes conference play today, Thursday, at Parkside Lanes versus Plainfield North at 4 p.m.

The Wolves will see the Tigers again on Saturday, when Plainfield North hosts Strikefest. That will take place at Town and Country Lanes starting at 9 a.m.

"We want to have a good showing there, but it's not the end all be all if we don't win it," Hillman said. "It's always fun to go in and compete, but the state title is not won at Strikefest. It'll be a good opportunity to go up against some good teams. The goal is a 6,000 for the day - that's 1,000 a game. It's definitely do-able. Even if we place something like ninth but still finish with 6,000, I'll be happy."

On Monday, the Wolves are back at Town and Country Lanes when they face off against non-conference Joliet West at 4:30 p.m.
